- Before every launch
- Check the enclosed propeller cage, propeller tips, camera window, and subject-tracking sensors. Hair, grass, and lint can hide inside the guard.
- After a hand catch or bump
- Stop the motors, inspect every blade and guard joint, then perform a low hover in a clear area before another tracking run.
- Every 10 flights
- Clean the lens and sensors with a blower and microfiber cloth, review battery health, and export footage before internal storage fills.

Palm launch or landing will not start cleanly
Confirm the correct mode, battery state, sensor cleanliness, level hand position, and a clear area around every propeller guard.

The DJI Neo is best understood as a palm-launch personal videographer, not a miniature replacement for a DJI Mini. At 135 grams it is easy to carry, can launch without a controller, and produces stabilized social clips quickly. Its short endurance, single-axis mechanical gimbal, electronic stabilization, and limited wind margin define the ceiling.

What changes the decision
Palm control is the product, not a novelty
The Neo can launch from a hand, run preset subject-tracking moves, and return without requiring the buyer to unpack a traditional controller. Phone, compatible remote controller, motion controller, and FPV-goggle paths expand it later. That range of control methods is unusually flexible at the price.
The tradeoff is that each control path changes range, precision, setup, and situational awareness. Palm and phone flying are best for close, deliberate clips; a real controller is the better path when composition and aircraft placement matter.
The camera is designed for finished clips, not maximum grading latitude
DJI lists 4K/30 recording with RockSteady or HorizonBalancing electronic stabilization and a single-axis mechanical tilt gimbal. That combination can produce smooth, ready-to-share footage, but it does not offer the mechanical three-axis stabilization, RAW still workflow, or 10-bit color flexibility of a Mini 4 Pro.
The Neo makes the strongest case for people who value automatic framing and speed to social delivery. Landscape photographers and buyers expecting a conventional flying camera should start with the Potensic Atom, DJI Flip, or Mini line instead.
Eighteen minutes is a controlled-condition maximum
DJI rates the Neo for about 18 minutes, or about 17 minutes with propeller guards, in controlled conditions. Wind, tracking, repeated takeoffs, temperature, and the return reserve shorten useful recording time. Spare batteries are closer to a requirement than an accessory for a full outing.
The light weight that makes palm launch possible also reduces wind authority. A forecast that is acceptable for a heavier GPS camera drone can still be a poor Neo day.

Is the DJI Neo a good first drone?
It is a good first drone for close selfie, follow, and social clips because it can launch from the hand and fly automated moves. It is not the best first choice for buyers who primarily want landscape photography, long flights, wind performance, or a traditional three-axis-gimbal camera drone.
Does the DJI Neo need FAA registration?
At about 135 grams, a Neo used only for recreation can qualify for the sub-250-gram registration exception. Every Part 107 aircraft must be registered, and all recreational flyers still need TRUST.
Does the DJI Neo have a three-axis gimbal?
