Usually sensible

Mount, protect, retain, route, or measure

Camera cradles, antenna and GPS mounts, bumpers, landing protection, cable guides, trays, covers, adapters, and bench fixtures solve local problems without pretending the printer replaces the airframe.

Needs an engineering case

Carry propulsion or primary structural load

Frames, arms, motor mounts, and payload structures need a documented load path, vibration and heat review, failure containment, and staged testing. Carbon-filled filament is not laminated carbon plate.

Needs permission

Share, remix, sell, or rehost another creator's work

Download access says nothing about reuse rights. Keep the file with its original host, name the creator, record the declared license, and follow both the license and the platform terms.

Material

TPU 95A

Start with a documented TPU 95A profile.

Why
This part's job is to retain, absorb, or isolate rather than hold a rigid structural angle. Geometry and hardness still determine how much it moves.
Measure
Exact frame and revision · Camera model and body version · Mount angle · Fastener size and spacing
Prove
Lens and prop clearance · Retention by hand · Vibration review in recorded footage · Post-flight movement check

Stop condition

The camera can move into the prop arc, the lens is exposed as the first impact point, or cooling openings are blocked.

Prove retention and clearance by hand, then use a low-energy flight check before normal operation.

These are starting categories. Formulation, hardness, moisture, color additives, printer, nozzle, profile, and geometry can change the result.

TPU 95A

Impact, retention, and isolation

Flexible filament can absorb movement and tolerate strain before breaking. Shore hardness, geometry, and brand still change the result.

Avoid: Rigid structural members, heat-soaked motor mounts, or any part whose job depends on holding a precise angle under load.

Good starting uses

  • Arm guards, bumpers, and landing protection
  • Cable strain relief and vibration isolation

PETG

General rigid workshop parts

PETG is comparatively easy to print, durable, and resistant to modest heat and moisture. It holds geometry better than TPU without becoming the default for every load.

Avoid: Parts expected to flex repeatedly in crashes, live beside a hot motor, or sit in severe sun and heat for long periods.

Good starting uses

  • Electronics trays and covers
  • Spacers, adapters, and sheltered brackets
  • Bench fixtures and tool holders
  • Fit-confirmed replacement clips away from high heat

ASA

Rigid parts exposed to sun and heat

ASA is intended for outdoor use and offers better UV and temperature resistance than common beginner filaments. It also warps easily and needs controlled printing conditions.

Avoid: A first print on an open machine, flexible crash protection, or a flight part that has not been tested for warping and layer adhesion.

Good starting uses

  • Outdoor equipment brackets
  • Rigid mounts stored or used in warm conditions
  • Ground-station housings
  • Weather-exposed workshop accessories

Nylon / PA

Advanced mechanical and abrasion loads

Nylon can provide strong mechanical, abrasion, and temperature performance. It is highly moisture-sensitive and much harder to print consistently.

Avoid: A beginner profile, a wet spool, or a part whose dimensions and layer strength will not be measured after printing.

Good starting uses

  • Advanced mechanical brackets
  • Abrasion-prone guides and retainers
  • Parts that need toughness with controlled flexibility
  • Experimental hybrid structures with a documented load path

PLA

Fit checks, patterns, and bench tooling

PLA is easy to print and dimensionally useful for proving shape. Its role here is rapid iteration, not automatic installation on an aircraft.

Avoid: Hot vehicles, exposed outdoor service, repeated impact, or a flight-critical structural part.

Good starting uses

  • First-pass fit checks
  • Drill, soldering, and assembly jigs
  • Templates and alignment gauges
  • Indoor organizers and labels

Release ladder

After the print finishes, testing begins

Weigh the finished aircraft with everything attached. Confirm that its registration and Remote ID path still match how the finished aircraft will be operated.

    Source

    Record the creator, original URL, declared license, file revision, and download date before changing anything.

  2. 02

    Bench

    Measure the cooled print, install the exact hardware, and check cables, cooling, lens view, antennas, battery, and prop clearance.

  3. 03

    Low energy

    Complete props-off checks first, then use a controlled low hover or equivalent contained test appropriate to the aircraft.

  4. 04

    Service

    Inspect movement, heat, vibration, wear, and fasteners after flight. Publish failures and retirement conditions with the success.
