Choose the credential

TRUST for recreation. Part 107 for most drone work.

Recreational → TRUST

Flying purely for fun. Take the free online TRUST test, carry the completion certificate, and follow the recreational exception. TRUST is not a pilot license.

Non-recreational → Part 107

Part 107 is the usual path for civil small-drone work outside the recreational exception. Specialized operations can require another FAA authorization. You can also fly for recreation under Part 107, following its rules.

  1. 01

    Confirm eligibility

    Be 16+, able to read, speak, write, and understand English, and in a physical and mental condition to fly safely.

  2. 02

    Prepare for the knowledge test

    Study regulations, airspace and charts, weather, loading and performance, and operations. Use the practice simulator to expose weak domains.

  3. 03

    Get an FTN and schedule with PSI

    Create an IACRA profile for your FAA Tracking Number, then book the Unmanned Aircraft General test at an approved PSI center. The FAA estimates the fee at about $175; confirm it when booking.

  4. 04

    Pass the exam

    The current PSI bulletin specifies 60 scored questions plus five unscored validation questions in two hours. You need 70% on the scored questions to pass.

  5. 05

    Apply and stay current

    Submit Form 8710-13 in IACRA after passing, complete TSA vetting, then finish free recurrent training every 24 calendar months.

Use any FAA-approved TRUST administrator, save the certificate, and carry it whenever you fly recreationally.
