The Flip protects the propellers; the Mini protects the mission

The Flip's folding, full-coverage propeller guards make hand launching and close, low-speed practice less intimidating. They reduce the chance that a minor contact destroys a propeller, but they do not make contact harmless and do not create permission to fly over people. Its sensing is limited compared with the Mini 4 Pro, so route selection still belongs to the pilot.

The Mini 4 Pro uses an omnidirectional binocular vision system plus a downward infrared sensor. DJI states that those sensors need recognizable surface texture and adequate light, so thin branches, wires, darkness, glare, and low-contrast surfaces can still be missed. The distinction is useful safety margin, not collision immunity.

Similar camera hardware, different delivery workflows

Both aircraft use a 1/1.3-inch sensor, an f/1.7 lens, a three-axis gimbal, DNG stills, D-Log M, and up to 4K/60 HDR recording. The Flip also records 4K/100 slow motion, so its lower price does not mean a throwaway camera. These are manufacturer specifications; this comparison does not claim a controlled side-by-side image test.

The Mini 4 Pro's gimbal physically rotates for native portrait capture, while the Flip outputs vertical formats from a horizontal camera workflow. The Mini also offers broader manual-flight flexibility and a 34-minute standard-battery maximum versus the Flip's shorter published maximum. For repeated landscapes, real estate, or planned client shots, those workflow differences matter more than a shared sensor size.

The registration answer depends on configuration and purpose

DJI lists both standard aircraft below 249 grams. In the United States, that can qualify a drone for the registration exception only when it is flown exclusively under the recreational exception. TRUST, airspace rules, visual line of sight, and site permission still apply.

Every aircraft operated under Part 107 must be registered regardless of weight. The Mini 4 Pro Battery Plus also pushes that aircraft above 249 grams, so weigh the complete takeoff configuration rather than treating the model name as a permanent legal category.

Is the DJI Flip safer than the Mini 4 Pro?
It is more forgiving of low-energy propeller contact because the propellers are enclosed. The Mini 4 Pro has the more complete obstacle-sensing system. Neither aircraft is safe to fly blindly or into people, branches, wires, or structures.
Do the Flip and Mini 4 Pro have the same camera?
