Walmart drone delivery is now live at seven Charlotte-area stores, flown by Wing

What changed: Clarification, October 21, 2026: an earlier version said the Charlotte Observer reported that deliveries start October 21. The Observer's article reports a Wing demonstration on October 20, and Wing's October 21 caption says the service is now available. The note on seeing drone delivery at checkout is now credited to Walmart, as the Observer reports it.

Decision brief

If you live near one of the seven stores, you can check your address at wing.com/walmart. Walmart says drone delivery shows up as an option when you order if the address on your account is in range, the Observer reports. Orders have to be small. Wing's head of communications told the Observer the limit is about 2.5 pounds.

The launch

Seven Supercenters, with more coming.

Wing and Walmart have started drone delivery in the Charlotte area. In a photo caption Wing distributed on October 21, the company said the service "is now available to homes surrounding seven Walmart Supercenters in Charlotte and surrounding areas." Wing said more stores in the region will go live "in the coming weeks and months." The Charlotte Observer reports that Wing gave it a demonstration at one of the stores on Tuesday, October 20.

Where

Charlotte and six nearby towns.

Tom Kuhn, Wing's head of communications, told the Observer the service runs from seven stores. The paper lists them in Charlotte, Concord, Gastonia, Kannapolis, Kings Mountain, Lincolnton, and Shelby. The Charlotte store is the Supercenter at 1830 Galleria Blvd., where the Observer reports the drone hub has 12 pads. The paper lists two more Charlotte stores as coming soon, on Callabridge Court and East Independence Boulevard.

How it works

Small orders, lowered on a tether.

Kuhn told the paper the drones weigh about 10 pounds and carry orders of up to about 2.5 pounds. The Observer reports a one-way range of about 6 miles. It says the drones hover at about 23 feet and lower the package on a tether. Citing Walmart's website, the paper reports the service is free for Walmart+ members for a limited time and costs $19.99 per delivery for everyone else.

The FAA record

Wing's Charlotte area was already reviewed.

The FAA's drone environmental review page lists Wing's Charlotte Metro operating area under the agency's 2024 programmatic assessment for drone package delivery in North Carolina. A later FAA re-evaluation covers Wing setting up as many as 25 hubs in that area, up from the six proposed in 2024. The Observer reports that Walmart joins Lowe's and Papa John's as retailers testing drone delivery through Wing. Wing said on October 5 that the Walmart partnership is working toward more than 270 stores.
