DoorDash Air launches with Part 135 certification and an aircraft designed in-house

DoorDash says it is now the eighth U.S. drone air carrier and is building the aircraft, ground handoffs, routing, and merchant integrations as one delivery system.

DoorDash has crossed the airline threshold, not the finish line.

DoorDash announced on July 29 that DoorDash Labs had received an FAA Part 135 air carrier certificate and was launching DoorDash Air, its first-party drone delivery program. The company calls itself the eighth U.S. drone operator to earn that authority. The FAA's public package-delivery roster, last updated July 21, still showed the previous seven when Drone Authority checked it, so the company announcement is currently newer than the agency's public list.

The certificate is a major threshold, not a blanket launch approval. The FAA says a package-delivery operator also needs authority for the intended operations, approved aircraft or exemptions, airspace authorization, environmental review, operating procedures, maintenance systems, validation testing, and compliance with state and local requirements. Part 135 is the current path for carrying another person's property for compensation by small drone beyond visual line of sight.

What is being built

The aircraft is new. The more important product is the handoff system around it.

DoorDash is not simply adding another operator to its app. It says DoorDash Labs is designing and building an American-made aircraft with a majority of U.S. components. The announcement shows only a close teaser and does not publish payload, range, aircraft weight, delivery method, operating area, or launch date. Those missing specifications matter more than the shape of the nose.

DoorDash says its network has completed more than 10 billion lifetime orders and tens of thousands of drone deliveries through partners. It estimates that its drone deliveries averaged 25 minutes in 2025 and says some locations in partner pilots saw DoorDash order volume rise roughly 30 percent for the nine weeks after launch. Those are company-reported commercial results, not a controlled comparison of every location or delivery mode.

The company describes the ground system as the harder problem: inventory reconciliation, routing, merchant handoffs at drive-throughs, rooftops, and back doors, plus the software that assigns an order to a driver, ground robot, partner aircraft, or DoorDash aircraft. Existing relationships with Wing, Flytrex, and Manna remain part of that network rather than disappearing with the in-house program.

An air carrier becomes a useful local service only when the aircraft, authority, infrastructure, merchant, and customer handoffs work on the same day.

    Secure local land-use approval, environmental review, noise and wildlife mitigation, power, loading, security, and emergency access.

    Keep inventory, packing, dispatch, handoff, customer instructions, and failed-delivery recovery synchronized.

    Sustain the airline

    Measure aircraft health, maintenance, weather availability, communications, incidents, community complaints, and actual delivery performance.

For pilots and job seekers, the announcement is another sign that delivery work is becoming an airline, robotics, and logistics career path. The openings sit in operations, maintenance, hardware, autonomy, safety, compliance, site deployment, merchant integration, and exception handling. A Part 107 certificate is useful foundation knowledge, but it does not by itself qualify someone to operate a Part 135 delivery network.
