FPV is four hobbies sharing one goggle standard: freestyle (tricks, the biggest tribe), racing (gates and lap times), cinematic (the footage — and the money), and long-range (distance, and the most rules friction). Every downstream purchase — frame, motors, video system, even which sim you drill in — flows from this choice. Let your sim hours make it before your wallet does.

- What's the difference between FPV freestyle and racing?
- Racing is flying a fixed course through gates and flags as fast as possible — precision, consistency, lap times, and a competitive scene (MultiGP chapters, sim leagues). Freestyle is acrobatic flying for its own sake — power loops, dives, flips through gaps, usually filmed. Racing quads trade durability and camera quality for weight; freestyle rigs are built to crash and carry an action camera. Most pilots sample both in the sim before their sticks pick a side.
- What is cinematic FPV?
- Flying for the footage rather than the flying: smooth proximity lines, one-take building dives, chase shots — the style behind modern car commercials and real-estate fly-throughs. Two hardware camps: cinewhoops (ducted, stable, safe near people and interiors) and larger rigs carrying action or cinema cameras for outdoor speed work. It's also the discipline with a professional path — cinematic FPV pilots bill real day rates, with Part 107 required the moment footage furthers a business.
- What is long-range FPV?
- Efficient cruising quads and wings built for distance and endurance rather than acro — mountain surfing, exploration lines. It leans on efficient 7-inch props, GPS rescue, and strong control links. It's also the discipline that collides hardest with the rules: beyond-visual-line-of-sight flying is not legal under either recreational rules or baseline Part 107, which keeps honest U.S. long-range flying shorter-leashed than YouTube suggests. Know the line before you build for it.
- Which FPV discipline should a beginner pick?
- Don't pick yet — pick a sim. Ten hours in Liftoff or Velocidrone flying both track laps and freestyle maps will tell you which one you keep loading. Gear-wise the safe first real aircraft is the same regardless: a Tinywhoop indoors, then a 3.5-5 inch. The discipline decision only starts costing money at your first serious build, and by then your sim hours will have made it for you.
