Planning estimate, not a mission upload

The route assumes a flat rectangular site, a nadir camera, constant altitude, and still air. Terrain following, obstacles, wind, acceleration, return reserve, and the mission app can change every number.

The math

What the calculator is doing

The estimate uses the camera's published field of view and still-image dimensions. It assumes the image is landscape-oriented across a rectangular site.

Ground footprint and GSD
Altitude and diagonal field of view define the ground footprint. Ground footprint width divided by image width gives ground sampling distance in distance per pixel.

Photo and line spacing
Photo spacing is footprint length multiplied by one minus front overlap. Flight-line spacing is footprint width multiplied by one minus side overlap.

Route, batteries, and field time
The grid distance includes every flight line, the shortest connectors, and your route allowance. Speed converts distance to flight time; usable minutes per battery determines the battery count.

GSD is sampling, not proof of accuracy

A 1 cm/px estimate means each source-image pixel represents about one centimeter on the ground. It does not promise one-centimeter horizontal or vertical accuracy.

Use measured battery time

Published endurance is not a mapping reserve. Enter the usable time your aircraft, battery condition, weather, route, and operating procedure support.

Validate before leaving the site

Review coverage, sharpness, exposure, control, checkpoints, and processing quality while a refly is still possible. Image count alone does not show a complete dataset.

Camera presets use manufacturer specifications. Overlap presets come from published photogrammetry and enterprise capture guidance. Reviewed 2026-08-27.

Common planning questions

Before you build the mission

How many acres can a drone map on one battery?
There is no universal acreage figure. Camera field of view, altitude, front and side overlap, field shape, speed, wind, turns, transit, and the pilot's reserve all change the result. Enter a measured reserve-aware flight time instead of the manufacturer's maximum endurance.
What overlap should I use for drone mapping?
Pix4D publishes at least 75% front and 60% side overlap for a general nadir grid. It recommends 80% front and side for flat agriculture and 85% front and side for forest or dense vegetation. DJI Enterprise commonly demonstrates 80% front and 70% side overlap for mapping missions. The project specification and processing workflow control the final setting.
Is GSD the same as map accuracy?
No. Ground sampling distance describes how much ground one image pixel represents. Accuracy also depends on camera calibration, image quality, overlap, positioning, control, checkpoints, terrain, processing, and the coordinate reference system. A small GSD does not prove survey accuracy.
Does this calculator account for hills, buildings, or terrain following?
No. It estimates a flat rectangular site with a nadir camera and constant height above the surface. Use the actual terrain model, obstacle plan, mission app, and required clearance when the site changes elevation or contains structures.
Can I use this route estimate as a flight plan?
No. It is a planning estimate for scoping acreage, image count, and battery needs. Build and review the final route in compatible mission-planning software, then verify airspace, authorization, weather, site permission, people, obstacles, visual line of sight, aircraft status, and reserves before flight.
