Why won't my drone take off?

DJI's GEO system labels map areas by restriction level. On January 13, 2025 DJI replaced its own U.S. geofencing data with FAA data and turned former U.S. no-fly zones into Enhanced Warning Zones. From November 17, 2025 it did the same worldwide and said its GEO Unlock Request service would be retired in early 2026. Regulatory Restricted Zones, which DJI illustrates with a prison, still prohibit flight.

What to do

1. In an Enhanced Warning Zone, the app asks you to confirm and unlock at the time of flight. DJI says no verified account or internet connection is needed.
2. Before you tap through, confirm the flight is legal: get LAANC or DroneZone authorization in controlled airspace and check for TFRs.
3. In a Regulatory Restricted Zone, do not try to work around it. Pick another site.

An unlock in DJI's app is a software permission, not FAA authorization. DJI says its FlySafe data is advisory and does not replace official airspace data.

"Remote ID error" and the motors won't start

DJI aircraft run a Remote ID pre-flight self-test before every takeoff. DJI says the drone cannot take off if it does not pass. Remote ID cannot be turned off on a Standard Remote ID aircraft.

What to do

1. Keep the flight app in the foreground with location permission on.
2. If your controller has no built-in GPS, connect a phone with location on as its position source, and let the controller get a GPS fix before powering the aircraft.
3. Update aircraft, controller, and goggles firmware. If the error persists, contact DJI support.

If your drone must be registered, it must broadcast Remote ID. Do not fly with a failed Remote ID system.

"Inconsistent Firmware Found" or the controller won't link

Messages: Inconsistent Firmware Found; Aircraft linking failure

The aircraft firmware does not match the controller or battery firmware, or the controller has not been linked to this aircraft. DJI lists firmware mismatch and distance during linking as common causes.

What to do

1. Tap the firmware update prompt in DJI Fly, or update with DJI Assistant 2 on a computer if no prompt appears.
2. Link with the controller close to the aircraft; DJI recommends staying within about 50 cm.
3. If one method fails, try the other linking method, and confirm aircraft and controller firmware match.

Compass, IMU, or vision system warning

Messages: Compass calibration required; IMU calibration required; Vision system error

The compass is sensitive to nearby metal and magnetic fields and needs recalibration after long storage or travel. The IMU needs recalibration when its data drifts. Vision sensors recalibrate themselves after a vision system error and can be calibrated manually.

What to do

1. Compass: move away from cars, rebar, and large metal, then run the calibration in DJI Fly under Safety, Sensors.
2. IMU: with the battery above 50 percent, set the aircraft on a level, dry surface and run IMU calibration from the same menu.
3. Restart and retry after a failed calibration. If it keeps failing, request a repair.

It flies but stops climbing or won't go farther

Messages: Altitude and distance limit warning

DJI lists several causes for altitude and distance limits, including an outdated app, flying in a limited zone, Beginner mode, a weak GPS signal, and the configured maximums. The default ceiling matches the FAA's 400-foot limit.

What to do

1. Update the app and leave Beginner mode.
2. Wait for a strong GPS signal.
3. Check the maximum altitude and distance under Safety settings.

Raising the software limit does not make flight above 400 feet legal. The FAA limits recreational and Part 107 flights to 400 feet in uncontrolled airspace unless a rule exception applies.

Potensic ATOM won't unlock the motors

Potensic lists three causes: the compass needs calibration or another sensor has failed, the battery is below 5 percent, or the firmware is out of date.

What to do

1. Calibrate the compass and check the app for sensor warnings.
2. Charge the battery.
3. Update the firmware in the Potensic app, then try again.

HOVERAir X1 won't launch or holds position badly

The HOVERAir X1 positions itself visually rather than with GPS, so it needs the right surroundings. HOVERAir says it works best between 0.5 and 10 meters up, over textured surfaces with more than 20 percent reflectivity, in good light, and in wind up to level 4, about 7.9 m/s.

What to do

1. Launch over grass, pavement, or another textured surface, not water or glossy floors.
2. Move to better light.
3. Wait for calmer wind.

Autel · Technical block

Autel drone blocked by a no-fly zone

Autel runs its own no-fly-zone system and offers an unlock request for operators who hold authorization to fly there.

What to do

1. Submit Autel's unlock request with your authorization document, the center coordinates, radius, altitude, dates, aircraft serial number, and app account.
2. Autel says it reviews requests within 24 hours and completes approved unlocks within 48 hours.

The unlock is a software change. You still need the FAA authorization your document represents.

I'm near Washington, D.C.

The FAA's Special Flight Rules Area covers a 30-mile radius around Reagan National Airport. Flying a drone inside the 15-mile inner ring is prohibited without specific FAA authorization, whatever your app shows.

What to do

1. Check the FAA's D.C. page and current NOTAMs before any flight in the region.
2. Assume the inner ring is closed to you unless you hold specific authorization.

The FAA says violators face stiff fines and criminal penalties.

The drone will fly, but can I?

A drone that starts its motors can still be illegal to fly. Four federal requirements apply before takeoff, depending on how you fly.

What to do

1. Recreational flyers must pass the TRUST test and show proof if asked.
2. Register the drone unless it weighs under 250 grams and you fly only for recreation. Registered drones must meet the Remote ID rule.
3. Get an airspace authorization, through LAANC or DroneZone, before flying under 400 feet in controlled airspace near airports.
4. Check NOTAMs for Temporary Flight Restrictions, which bar drones without permission in an area for a set time.
