What changes in Wyoming

You can generally fly a drone in Wyoming if you follow the FAA rules and then add the state, local, and land-manager restrictions below.

Federal FAA rules apply across Wyoming. Wyo. Stat. § 6-5-214 criminalizes drone trespass over penal institutions and contraband delivery, § 19-13-503 (2025) covers drone flights over critical infrastructure, and the general voyeurism statute covers clandestine viewing where privacy is expected. No statute preempting local drone ordinances was found. Game and Fish bars using aircraft to spot or locate big game for taking during most of the year, and State Parks proposed in January 2026 to allow drones with the park superintendent's prior written permission.234

State-specific rules to check

    Wyo. Stat. § 6-5-214: except as authorized by the person in charge, no person shall intentionally trespass over or in a penal institution or its grounds with an unmanned aircraft system to photograph, surveil, broadcast, or record; to convey contraband; or to deliver a deadly weapon. The offense is a misdemeanor, and weapon delivery a felony of up to ten years and $10,000.2

    Wyo. Stat. § 6-4-304, voyeurism, is a misdemeanor for looking or viewing in a clandestine, surreptitious, prying, or secretive manner into an area where a person has a reasonable expectation of privacy without consent; the statute does not name drones but reaches a drone camera.2

    No statewide preemption of local drone ordinances was found in the statutes reviewed.2

    Wyoming Game and Fish Commission Chapter 2, Section 12: no person shall use any aircraft with the intent to spot, locate, and aid in the taking of any big game animal from August 1 through January 31, or any trophy game animal during any open season, and Section 20 bars real-time video equipment used to spot or locate big game for taking.3

    Wyoming State Parks gave notice on January 7, 2026 of proposed amendments to its Chapter 1 rules that would allow drone use with prior written permission from the park superintendent. Confirm with the park whether the amended rule is in force before relying on it.4

    Wyo. Stat. § 19-13-503 (2025, SF0132) makes it a misdemeanor, and a felony on a second offense, to fly a drone over or near critical infrastructure to photograph it, loiter, or further a crime, unless the flight complies with an FAA authorization or FAA rules. The same act added § 10-4-303(d): unlawfully low or dangerous drone flight over another person's land is a misdemeanor of up to $750, six months, or both.1
