FAA extends comment deadline on proposed drone restrictions near critical sites
The FAA's UAFR proposal would create Standard and Special drone flight restrictions around eligible fixed-site facilities. Comments are now due August 5, 2026.
The FAA has extended the public comment period for docket FAA-2026-4558, the proposed rule that would create Unmanned Aircraft Flight Restrictions, or UAFRs, near eligible fixed-site facilities. The original July 6 deadline is now August 5, 2026.
The proposal would create two lanes. A Standard UAFR would limit access to certain operators that meet safety and security requirements, including Remote ID, notification, and shortest-practicable transit. A Special UAFR would be more restrictive, with drone operations barred unless express approval is provided.
For pilots, the live issues are discoverability, map quality, recreational access, Remote ID edge cases, automated notification, public-interest flights, and keeping boundaries tied to actual risk. If you want the FAA to consider those concerns, file a specific docket comment before August 5.
